Give Way

New Year's Goals and Resolutions.  Even the words cause my body to tense up, to become resolute, to grin and bear the growth ahead.  Does it ever feel that way to you?  I’ve achieved a lot in my life, and often, I’ve done it without setting  goals.  Did you know that was possible?  I’ve always been focused on growth, but I’m not sure that there is a “right” way to set goals.  Each of us need to think about growth in a way that serves us, that aligns with who we uniquely you are.  Here are some things to think about as you decide what might work for you.

  • There is no right way to achieve a goal

  • How do you want to feel while you are pursuing this goal?

  • There is no correlation between the amount of suffering you do and the achievement of the goal.

  • Is it possible that growth does not always equal discomfort?

  • How your goal feels is a reliable indicator for your success.

How you feel along the way to growth matters, it isn’t only about achieving the goal.  I read something recently that really resonated with me.  It was a woman remarking on a road sign she saw in Tahiti that said “Give Way”.  She thought about that as she contemplated a new year and it made me think also.  Here are some of my intentions for the new year:

  • Give way for more love and joy in my life

  • Give way for more thought, prayer and learning

  • Give way for more service to others

  • More health and wellness

  • More fun and adventure

I wonder what these intentions will enable me to discover about myself this year?  These goals make me feel open and hopeful and excited.  It makes me look forward with hope to a wonderful new year.  That feeling right there is a pretty good predictor of success.  As always, feelings matter so much.

What will you give way to?   What will you allow for yourself this year?

Sending you lots of love!
